The machinima “Reversal,” set in the urban landscape of Los Santos within the game GTA V, reflects on the frozen nature of its characters and explores perceptions of prejudice in both the digital and real worlds. This complex narrative aims to examine and challenge preconceptions, calling for action against injustice and discrimination.
The project alternates between the experiences of two iconic characters, Franklin and Trevor, and their relationships with NPCs. Through a mod, the creator alters the skin color of the protagonists, effectively swapping their identities. This inversion tests how the virtual world of Los Santos reacts and how it discerns character nature beyond mere appearance.
“Reversal” highlights the concept of informal colonialism, where power relations remain invisible but still pervasive. Franklin, representing a marginalized community and victim of structural violence, embodies the impact of informal colonialism on urban peripheries, where power is exercised covertly yet oppressively. On the other hand, Trevor, while similarly disadvantaged, doesn’t face the same level of discrimination, reflecting the complex dynamics of power and bias in both the game and society at large.
